TRUK entered their first 5 a side league and league hosts Camden Bells were TRUK’s first opponents, and it was Camden who took the lead. Maysa made it 1-1 and Mandy Walker bagged the winner and the 3 points with a long range strike. Next up for TRUK was Brockwell Bullets and TRUK put on a great display running out 12–1 winners to move top of the Legaue with Lucy Copsey bagging an incredible 9 goals.
Week 3 proved to be the week that Stonewall won the league and therefore leaving TRUK to finish runners up. To say the match was controversial would be an understatement….Stonewall arrived with players who had not played in their previous 2 games and never featured again and between them they grabbed 4 of Stonewalls 5 goals. TRUK however raced into a 3-0 lead only to be pegged back to 3-2 at half time. Stonewall then made it 3-3 and TRUK were denied a clear penalty when Reid stepped into the box but bizarrely the referee ignored this. Stonewall took the lead to make it 4-3 but Lucy Copsey scored a great goal to make it 4-4 which is how it looked like it was going to finish a result that ultimately would have seen us walk away with the league title. However, with seconds remaining the referee gave Stonewall a throw in when it was clearly a TRUK ball…this was taken quickly, and Julia smashed the ball into the bottom corner on her only Stonewall appearance in this league. We must take something from the fact that Stonewall dropped their regular players to bring in other players to play against us and we would have been a match for them but for some bizarre refereeing decisions…..
Like a wounded animal we took our frustrations out on Deptford Ravens as we beat then 19-0 and followed this up with an 8-1 victory over Goaldiggers. Goals Aloud were then beaten 15-1 and we finished the season with a 5-0 victory over Ex Girlfriend.
We thoroughly enjoyed the season and meet some wonderful teams and some wonderful people. Stonewall was always going to be a tough game after we beat them in the TRUK Cup and they were out for revenge. We showed dignity and sportsmanship by staying and watching them collect their winners medals.
